KERALA PSC EMPLOYEES UNION

The backdrop of the agitations and struggles of 1970s paved way to the formation of PSC Employees Union. Notably, 1970s witnessed some of the most remarkable events in the history of post independence India. This decade also saw wide ranging, expansive and prolonged labour struggles , agitations and strikes of which a few prominent were those of railway employees, central government employees, state government employees and teachers .

About

The strike of state government employees and teachers which commenced on January 10, 1973 had to be unilaterally withdrawn on 3rd March since it was suppressed using brutal force, torture and iron hand of the then Government, similar to the high handed measures adopted to stop the previous strikes of railway employees , state government employees and central government employees .
Noticeably PSC office was one of the rarest sectors in which the strike of 1973 was least affected on any counts. Resultant to the protest and discontentment with the indifferent attitude against the legitimate agitations and strikes, of the then leadership of the erstwhile PSC Staff Association, twenty five members resigned and eventually formed PSC Employees Union
The then leadership of the Association showed a blind eye to the 50 day’s strike for pay revision and interim relief braving the torture and brutality of the government machinery and had regretfully failed to display solidarity to the striking employees owing to their devious political affinity and was completely against that inevitable strike.
Although sincere efforts were on to avoid split in the organization the leadership showed disinterestedness in the conciliatory efforts . Eventually PSC Employees Union became a reality in 1973, owing to the above circumstances.
The first elected committee comprised of Com. K Prabhakaran Pillai , President, Com. K.Sathyakan, Secretary, Com. K.K Chellappan, Treasurer and Com. K Ramakrishna Pillai, J. Vishwaroopan , M.Mohammed Illiyas and K.Govindan Pillai as committee members.
Consequent to the constitution of PSC Employees Union in the agitations for revision of pay and allowances and service conditions the active involvement of PSC staff was effectively ensured by the Union. In addition the exclusive problems faced only by the employees of PSC were appropriately addressed and redressed by the Union thereby establishing growth of the organization as well.
Further, right from the functioning of PSCEU it had constantly stood for the scientific and structured overhaul of the recruitment processes of PSC, focused at eliminating delay in recruitments and also in adopting candidate friendly measures in the selections of PSC.
Proudly, PSCEU which commenced in 1973 with just 25 members has eventually grown magnanimously that presently it represents the vast majority of the employees of PSC.
